Sharing projects: links, QR & AR

File → Share… mints anonymous, view-only links to a frozen snapshot of your project. Anyone with the link can view it (no account needed), making shares the way to put a design in front of a client, a production manager, or a crew on site.

The flip side of "anyone with the link" is that only people with the link can view it. The random code in the URL is the secret: there is no directory of shares, nothing lists them, and a share cannot be found by guessing or browsing: a request must present the exact code before the server will return anything at all. Treat the link itself as the credential, and revoke it when the audience should change.

The three share modes

ModeWhat the recipient gets
Client previs (3D)A read-only 3D preview: orbit and zoom, nothing technical.
Documentation (PDF)The drawing package as a PDF plus a mobile quick-reference. Every sheet carries a QR code that scans back to this same link.
Augmented reality (iOS)A scan-to-open link that drops the wall, at scale, into Spectacle's iOS AR viewer, with the live face textures.
  1. Open File → Share… (or ⌘K → Share…).
  2. Pick a mode tile.
  3. Optionally type a Link name (say Acme: client review v2). It's the title everyone who opens the link sees, and the label you'll recognise the link by in Active links. Leave it blank and the link simply uses the project name (shown greyed out in the box). Names can be up to 120 characters.
  4. Click Create share link (Create AR link for AR; it briefly shows Rendering AR textures… while it captures the wall's content). Pressing Enter in the name box does the same.
  5. The dialog shows the URL with a Copy button and a QR code you can point a phone at. The name box clears, ready for the next link.

The intro line says it all: anyone with the link can view a frozen snapshot of this project. No account needed. Links last 90 days and can be revoked below.

The project must be saved to the cloud first (a share points at a cloud project). If it isn't, the dialog offers Save to cloud inline and then continues straight into link creation. That save consumes cloud-project quota, and since the Free plan has zero shares and zero cloud projects, sharing is effectively a paid feature. See Plans & billing.

Shares are frozen

A share captures the project at the moment you create it. Later edits never reach viewers. Make a new link when the design changes, and revoke the old one to avoid confusion.

Below the create button, Active links lists this project's links, each with:

  • a type badge: 3D, PDF, or AR
  • the link's name, if you gave it one, above its short link code (otherwise just the code). Links a PDF export made for its scan-to-open QR are named Drawing-set export
  • the view count (viewers are counted for you)
  • a revoke button (trash icon)

Revoking closes the link immediately, and it takes the link's stored files with it: a Documentation share's PDF, and an AR share's face-texture images. Both live at their own public addresses, so without that a bookmarked or forwarded file address would keep working after the link itself went dead. Revoked and expired links free your share quota right away.

Those files are deleted the moment you revoke, but the delivery network that speeds them up can keep handing out a copy it already has for up to a minute afterwards. Someone who saved the file's own address, and refreshes it in that first minute, may still get it once; after that it is gone for good.

Deleting the project revokes its links too. A share is a frozen copy, so it would otherwise keep serving the design long after the project itself was gone. Deleting a cloud project closes every link made from it and deletes their stored files (Documentation PDFs and AR face textures) in the same moment. That is one-way: a revoked link is never turned back on, so if you need the project shared again, create a new link.

Links are managed per project, inside this dialog. There is no cross-project shares dashboard and no password protection on links; if you used those in V1, note they didn't carry over. A link's name is set when you create it and can't be edited afterwards; to rename one, create a new link and revoke the old.

What viewers see

Opening a share URL (https://app.led.fyi/#/s/<code>) shows the snapshot without an account:

  • Client shares: a full-screen read-only 3D view headed by the link name (or the project name when the link has none), screen and panel counts, and the usual orbit/camera controls.
  • Documentation shares: a mobile-first quick reference (project overview, per-screen specs, bill of materials) under the same link-name heading, with the full drawing-package PDF embedded below and a Download PDF button.
  • AR shares: Spectacle receives the link name (or the project name) as the project's title.

An invalid, expired, or revoked link shows "This link is invalid, has expired, or was revoked."

Old links keep working across app updates: snapshots are upgraded on load, so a link made before a format change still opens.

Augmented reality shares (Spectacle for iOS)

An AR link (https://app.led.fyi/ar/<code>) targets Spectacle, LED.FYI's free iPhone companion app:

  • On an iPhone with Spectacle installed, the link opens the wall directly in AR at full physical scale, with the actual on-screen content as face textures.
  • On an iPhone without it, the landing page offers Open in Spectacle plus an App Store link.
  • On desktop or Android, the page shows a QR code to scan with an iPhone (Spectacle is iOS-only).

Two fidelity notes:

  • Curved screens are flattened to a single plane in AR: right place and size, but no bend.
  • Face textures are downscaled (longest edge 1024 px) to keep the handoff light. They are stored alongside the link rather than inside it, so an AR link works the same on a one-screen design and a twenty-screen wall; Spectacle fetches each screen's image as it needs it.

AR is the one link type whose address is a plain /ar/<code> path rather than the #/… form the rest of the app uses. That's what lets an iPhone recognise the link as belonging to Spectacle and hand the tap straight to the app instead of opening Safari.

AR links made before August 2026

Older AR links look like app.led.fyi/#/ar/<code>. They still open the AR landing page in a browser, and the Open in Spectacle button there still works, but tapping the link itself will not jump straight into the app. Share again to get a link that does.

INFO

AR shares require the Spectacle AR entitlement (Pro and up) on top of your share quota. An AR link opened as a regular #/s/… URL falls back to the normal 3D preview.

Linking your LED.FYI account to Spectacle

Spectacle has its own Pro features, and an LED.FYI subscription already covers them, so you don't pay for both. Linking is how Spectacle finds out.

You start it from the app on your iPhone; Spectacle opens the linking page in your browser and the page does the rest. (The page answers at two addresses, app.led.fyi/#/connect/spectacle and the plain path app.led.fyi/connect/spectacle, so it works whichever version of Spectacle you have installed. You never have to type either one.)

  1. Sign in, if you aren't already. The page waits behind the normal sign-in screen. Sign in there with your email and password and it picks up exactly where it left off. Continue with Google, Continue with Apple and an emailed sign-in link return you to the app's start page instead, so once you're signed in, start the link again from Spectacle.
  2. Check what you're about to link. The page shows the email address it will link, the plan granting the access, and when that access renews or ends. Studio access through a team seat and a complimentary or trial account all count here, not just a personal subscription, and access with no end date (a sponsored team, a comped account) simply shows no date rather than a made-up one.
  3. Confirm and continue. You land back in Spectacle with Pro unlocked, for as long as your LED.FYI access lasts.

If your account has no subscription, the page says so and offers the plans instead of a confirm button; there is nothing to link until then.

If nothing happens after you confirm

The last step hands off to Spectacle through a spectacle:// address, which only works on a device that has the app installed. If the handoff doesn't fire, the page leaves a link you can tap again plus an App Store link. Linking from a desktop browser will always stop here. Run it from the iPhone that has Spectacle on it.

Linking grants Spectacle Pro; it does not move your projects. To get a wall into Spectacle you still send it an AR link.

Share limits by plan

Active (non-revoked, non-expired) links are capped account-wide, not per project:

PlanActive share links
Free0
Pro50
StudioUnlimited

Hitting the cap shows an upgrade nudge; revoke old links or upgrade to continue. The 90-day lifetime is fixed; there's no UI to extend a link; create a fresh one instead.

TIP

Share links always use the public web address (app.led.fyi), even when created in the desktop app, so a phone scanning your QR code can always open it.
