Installing on macOS, Windows & Linux
The desktop app ships as native installers for all three desktop platforms. Download the one for your computer from led.fyi/downloads, run it, and sign in with your LED.FYI account, the same account you use in the web app at app.led.fyi. See Sign-in, plans & the offline license.
The downloads page always offers the latest release. It has a card for each of macOS, Windows and Linux, each with a main download button and the other formats listed underneath, and it marks the card for the computer you're browsing from with Your computer. Installer files are named LED.FYI-<version>-<platform or architecture>.<extension>, for example LED.FYI-2.0.4-universal.dmg for a Mac or LED.FYI-2.0.4-x64.exe for most Windows PCs; each platform's files are listed below. Version numbers continue the 1.x line: 2.0 is the rebuilt app; see Keeping the app up to date.
Coming from LED.FYI 1.x
LED.FYI 2 is a separate release line with its own downloads and its own update feed; installing it is a deliberate step, and your 1.x app will never turn into it by itself. See Upgrading from the 1.x app below for what happens to your 1.x work.
macOS
| Format | File | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| dmg | LED.FYI-<version>-universal.dmg | Disk image: open it and drag LED.FYI into the Applications link |
| zip | LED.FYI-<version>-universal.zip | Archive of the same app: unzip and move it to Applications yourself |
One download covers every Mac: the app is a single universal build that runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon. Requires macOS 12 Monterey or newer.
Windows
| Format | File | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Installer (x64) | LED.FYI-<version>-x64.exe | A classic setup wizard for most Windows PCs (Intel and AMD) |
| Installer (ARM64) | LED.FYI-<version>-arm64.exe | The same wizard for Windows on Arm (Snapdragon and other Arm PCs) |
| Portable (x64) | LED.FYI-<version>-x64-portable.exe | A single exe that runs from anywhere; nothing is installed |
There is no combined installer: pick the one that matches your processor. Not sure which you have? Open Settings → System → About and read System type: "x64-based processor" means the x64 installer, "ARM-based processor" means ARM64.
The installer is a real wizard, not a silent one-click install:
- Installs per-user; no administrator rights needed.
- Lets you choose the install directory.
- Creates a desktop shortcut and a Start-menu shortcut, both named LED.FYI.
- Launches the app when the wizard finishes.
Uninstalling through Windows keeps your app data: your local project history, cached offline license, and preferences stay on the machine, so reinstalling picks up exactly where you left off.
Linux
| Format | Files | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AppImage | LED.FYI-<version>-x86_64.AppImage, LED.FYI-<version>-arm64.AppImage | Make it executable (chmod +x) and run it; no installation |
| deb | LED.FYI-<version>-amd64.deb, LED.FYI-<version>-arm64.deb | Depends on libgtk-3-0, libnotify4, libnss3, libxss1, libxtst6, xdg-utils, libatspi2.0-0, libuuid1 |
| rpm | LED.FYI-<version>-x86_64.rpm | x64 only |
The installed executable and launcher entry are named led-fyi.
What the installer registers
Installing registers the ledfyi:// link type with your operating system. This is how sign-in round-trips work on desktop: Google/Apple sign-in and email links (magic links, verification) open in your browser, and the browser hands the result back to the app through a ledfyi:// link, even starting the app if it isn't running. See Sign-in, plans & the offline license.
Upgrading from the 1.x app
LED.FYI 2.0 uses the same per-user data folder as the 1.x app:
| Platform | Where that folder is |
|---|---|
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/led-fyi |
| Windows | %APPDATA%\led-fyi |
| Linux | ~/.config/led-fyi |
Three things to know:
- Installing 2.0 replaces the 1.x app. Both are called
LED.FYIand register as the same application, so 2.0 takes the place of 1.x rather than sitting beside it. On Windows it upgrades the existing installation, and on macOS it replacesLED.FYI.app. You are moving to 2.0, not running the two in parallel. - Nothing 1.x saved is deleted. Replacing the app does not replace the data folder above. The two versions keep their projects, license and settings in separate places inside it, so everything 1.x saved is still there and still readable by 1.x if you ever reinstall it.
- LED.FYI 2 doesn't read what 1.x saved on this computer. It starts with its own local project, preferences and license, so sign in once, online, with the same account. Your cloud work is waiting for you: if you had a paid plan when LED.FYI moved to version 2, the projects from the old app are in File → Open from cloud… (see Projects from the old LED.FYI). For work that only ever lived on this computer, save each project as a project file in 1.x before you upgrade, then open the file in LED.FYI 2 with File → Open…; projects from 1.x convert automatically. See Project files.
The practical consequence: nothing is deleted, but 1.x stops being one click away. If you want to compare the two, keep a copy of the 1.x installer before you upgrade.
If your 1.x app offers you LED.FYI 2
The 1.x desktop app offers you version 2 the same way it has always offered updates: shortly after you open it, a box appears with the new version number, a short note, and Download Update or Later.
- Nothing downloads until you click Download Update. Choosing Later just closes the box; you will be asked again next time you open the app.
- Once it has downloaded, the box offers Restart & Update to install it now. Otherwise it installs when you next quit the app.
- If you turned off Automatically Check for Updates in the 1.x app, the box doesn't appear by itself. Choose Check for Updates... in the 1.x app to see the offer, or download version 2 from led.fyi/downloads.
- Everything above applies: it replaces the 1.x app, nothing 1.x saved is deleted, and you sign in once with the same account. Save any projects that only live on this computer as project files before you click Download Update.
- Version 2 is the newer app, so there is no going back to 1.x through the update box. If you ever want 1.x again you would reinstall it from a saved installer.
- On a Windows on ARM machine the update offers the standard (Intel/AMD) installer, which Windows runs for you. If you would rather have the build made for ARM, download it from led.fyi/downloads instead.
Staying on 1.x for now
Since LED.FYI moved to version 2, the 1.x app works against a frozen copy of the old LED.FYI, which closes on 6 November 2026. Until then it can still sign in and open the cloud projects it had, read-only; nothing it does reaches LED.FYI 2. Share links it creates show that frozen copy and stop working when the old LED.FYI closes, and its augmented-reality links don't open at all. Its Export my data covers only the frozen copy, and an account deletion you request in it is carried over to your account in LED.FYI 2 (see Your account). Changing your plan, managing a team and linking Spectacle only work in LED.FYI 2 or at app.led.fyi.
Uninstalling & where your data lives
Your app data (the durable local project history, the cached offline license, and your preferences) lives in your operating system's per-user application-data location for LED.FYI, not inside the app itself.
- macOS: quit the app and drag it out of Applications. Your data remains in your user Library.
- Windows: uninstall from Settings → Apps. The uninstaller deliberately leaves your app data in place; reinstalling restores your local project and license.
- Linux: remove the package with your package manager (
apt remove led-fyi,dnf remove led-fyi), or just delete the AppImage file.
The app's log file lives next to that data; see Log files if support asks for it.
A restored license still has to check out against the app you reinstalled. If the new build ships a replaced signing key, the old cached license won't verify until the app has been online once; see Sign-in, plans & the offline license. Reinstall while you have internet and it sorts itself out silently.
One project lives on the machine
The desktop app keeps one local project (with its full version history) on the machine; see Working offline. If a machine is leaving your control, export the project as a .ledproj file first (Project files) or save it to the cloud (Cloud projects).
